In order to stand out be different!
In media it is normal to consume what ever is thrown at us on a daily basis but has anyone ever taken the time to break down what they consume? Everyone believes themselves to be a critic but how well can one truly critique is the real question. Here are two examples through a magazine layout and resume.
"Print isn't dead!"
As one analyzes the magazine layout, it immediately catches the readers attention. The font is a elegant one making the magazine's look very formal and important. The kerning is excellent as there is just enough space between the letters allowing a reader to understand what was typed clearly. The use of bold and italicizing was confidently used to separate the article in the magazine by subgroups. There are clear signs of columns and grids being used in this layout as paragraphs are clearly separated, two huge words placed in the middle of a page, etc. The writer does a great job with pairing an image with the article to give the readers a face which leaves room for more of a understanding on what's at hand in the magazine. What seems to steal the show however is that gigantic bold "Siren Call" that starts off the first paragraph in the article. It somehow just works. Not only does it look good but it's a hell of a bold statement if you catch my drift. Overall the magazine layout is the precise reason as to why print isn't dead! there's still art within the craft and it should be respected more.
"Things going sideways"
Resumes are a tool to help you sell yourself. If you can't sell yourself than there's a problem. Having a resume is basically a way of telling people everything you've accomplished or done with out obnoxiously bragging. It is what can make or break it for a job or career you've always wanted. In a world where companies are hiring so many others who are alike what truly separates people? For starters a good resume will. Might as well design a resume just as unique. For this resume it's clear that there was use of columns and grids to give this layout a sideway feel. It has a good use of kerning and font size to distinguish the different categories. Spacing was adjusted well and the line from the I in Christina does a good job of giving the resume a unique feeling while also creating depth. The one and only thing that seems a little off about this resume is the fact that its on a tilted angle. Though it does make it unique and helps it stand out it can make it a hassle for companies to care to tilt their heads or paper in order to read your accomplishments. One may want to reconsider and go for a different approach when it comes to resumes.
Critique is all about going in depth on what is seen. It is an important skill to have in order to gain a better perspective on everything.
